Doom: The Dark Ages – A Return to Roots

Following the critically acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020), id Software is shifting gears with Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel that returns to the franchise's core gameplay principles. Instead of the platforming elements of Eternal, The Dark Ages emphasizes intense, close-quarters combat with a focus on powerful melee weapons.

While the iconic arsenal of Doom weaponry returns – including the skull-crushing new addition showcased in the reveal trailer – the game heavily features three melee weapons: an electrified gauntlet, a flail, and the Shield Saw. Game director Hugo Martin described the combat as "stand and fight," highlighting the importance of strategic positioning and skillful use of these tools.

Inspiration for The Dark Ages draws from the original Doom, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Zack Snyder's 300. This influence is evident in the game's intense, large-scale combat encounters, reminiscent of the iconic battles in 300. The Glory Kill system has been redesigned for improved fluidity, allowing for dynamic finishing moves from any angle. Levels are designed for exploration, with objectives tackled in any order, and a streamlined structure aiming for approximately one-hour play sessions.

Addressing feedback from Doom Eternal, The Dark Ages presents its narrative through cutscenes rather than the in-game Codex. The story promises a grand, cinematic experience, expanding the Doom universe and focusing on the Slayer's growing power. The control scheme has been simplified for improved intuitiveness, and the game features a single currency system and skill-based rewards. Difficulty can be customized extensively via in-game sliders.

Notable gameplay elements from the reveal trailer, such as the giant Atlan mech and cybernetic dragon riding, will feature prominently, each offering unique abilities and challenges. Importantly, The Dark Ages will not include a multiplayer mode, allowing the developers to fully concentrate on crafting a compelling single-player experience.

Martin emphasizes a deliberate departure from Doom Eternal's style, aiming for a more classic Doom feel. The focus is on delivering a powerful, yet refined, gameplay experience rooted in the series' origins. The game's release date is set for May 15th.
