He cited intellectual property rights as the primary concern. This announcement was made during an investor Q&A session focusing on AI's role in game development.

Furukawa acknowledged AI's longstanding presence in game development, especially in controlling non-playable character (NPC) behavior. However, he distinguished between traditional AI and the newer generative AI, capable of creating original text, images, and video content through pattern recognition.

Despite recognizing generative AI's creative potential, Furukawa highlighted IP challenges: "Generative AI can produce creative outputs, but IP rights issues are a concern." This reflects the potential for generative AI to inadvertently infringe on existing works and copyrights.

Maintaining the Unique Nintendo Experience

He stated, "We have decades of expertise in creating optimal game experiences." He added, "While we adapt to technological advancements, we aim to deliver unique value that technology alone can't replicate."

Ubisoft, for example, introduced Project Neural Nexus NEO NPCs, using generative AI for NPC conversations. Project producer Xavier Manzanares clarified that generative AI is just a tool, stating, "GenAI is a tool, it's technology. It doesn't create games; it requires design and a dedicated team."

Similarly, Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu views generative AI as a business opportunity, while Electronic Arts (EA) CEO Andrew Wilson predicts generative AI will significantly impact EA's development processes.
