Halo Studios Embarks on a New Era of Halo Game Development
Microsoft-owned Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) has announced the commencement of several new Halo game projects. This announcement is coupled with a rebranding initiative, signaling a fresh start for the franchise."Halo's history comprises two distinct chapters: Bungie and 343 Industries," stated Studio Head Pierre Hintze. "We recognize a strong player demand for more. This isn't just about streamlining development; we're reimagining how we create Halo games. A new chapter begins today."
The studio will leverage Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) for future Halo titles. UE5's reputation for high-quality graphics and realistic physics is well-established. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney tweeted, "The first Halo redefined console gaming in 2001, and Halo has consistently pushed boundaries. Epic is proud that Halo Studios has chosen our tools for their future endeavors!"
Halo's leadership team outlined the franchise's new direction. Hintze explained, "We previously overemphasized creating conditions for Halo Infinite's success." The transition to UE5, he added, will enable the creation of superior Halo games. "Our sole focus is creating the best possible Halo games," he emphasized.
Halo franchise COO Elizabeth Van Wyck added, "Success hinges on delivering games players want. This new structure empowers game developers to make key decisions." The studio is actively seeking broader player feedback to guide the franchise's future. "Ultimately, player evaluation is paramount," she noted.
Studio Art Director Chris Matthew highlighted UE5's advantages in meeting evolving player expectations. "Some aspects of our previous engine are nearly 25 years old," he explained. "While 343 continuously developed it, Unreal offers features unavailable to us, features that would have required significant time and resources to replicate."
The shift to UE5 also streamlines content updates. "It's not just about faster game releases, but also quicker updates and adaptation to player preferences," Van Wyck stated. Halo Studios has begun recruiting for these new projects.
