Call of Duty Studio Loses Multiplayer Development Director

After a 15-year tenure at Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty multiplayer creative director Greg Reisdorf has departed. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Reisdorf spearheaded the multiplayer development for the 2023 iteration of Modern Warfare 3, overseeing live seasons and content updates.

Reisdorf's journey with Sledgehammer Games, established in 2009, commenced with his involvement in the original Modern Warfare 3. The studio's collaborative efforts with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software extended to recent releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

In a January 13th Twitter announcement, Reisdorf confirmed his departure on January 10th. He highlighted key achievements, including his work on Modern Warfare 3's Scorched Earth campaign mission and the memorable Soap-on-a-gurney sequence in the Blood Brothers mission.

His influence extended to shaping the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, contributing to Advanced Warfare's gameplay mechanics (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads), weapon signatures, energy weapons, and map design. He openly discussed his reservations about Advanced Warfare's "Pick 13" system, believing that killstreaks shouldn't impact essential loadout choices.

Reisdorf also reflected on his contributions to Call of Duty: WW2, noting the initial controversy surrounding the class-locked weapons system and its subsequent revision. His work on Call of Duty: Vanguard included the design of both discovery and traditional three-lane maps, reflecting his preference for fun gameplay over strict military realism.

His final role involved multiplayer map development for the 2023 Modern Warfare 3, including reinterpretations of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps (e.g., incorporating Shepherd's skull into the Rust map). As creative director, he oversaw the live seasons, adding modes like Snowfight and Infectious Holiday in Season 1. His contributions to Modern Warfare 3 encompassed over 20 post-launch modes. Reisdorf's concluding statement hints at continued involvement within the gaming industry.
