Dragon Age: Veilguard Unveils Class and Faction Details

Dragon Age: The Veilguard reimagines the franchise with a more action-focused combat system, a departure that has sparked debate among fans. However, core Dragon Age elements remain, albeit adapted to this new style. Faction choice, determined during character creation, significantly impacts gameplay beyond simple dialogue variations. Rook's background influences their experience, regardless of class.

The game features nine unique class specializations, each intrinsically linked to the narrative and setting. For instance, Rook's connection to the Veil precludes a Blood Mage specialization, reflecting the lore. Each of the three core classes (Warrior, Mage, Rogue) boasts three specializations, unlocked through interaction with Northern Thedas' factions.

Specializations are directly tied to specific factions. The Mourn Watch of Nevarra, for example, might train Rook in Reaper or Death Caller techniques depending on their class. The Reaper, a novel specialization, utilizes "night blades," while the Death Caller focuses on necromancy. Faction selection not only shapes backstory and identity but also influences the character's non-combat attire.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Classes and Specializations:

Warrior:

  • Reaper: A life-draining dark fighter, risking death for power.
  • Slayer: A master of two-handed weaponry.
  • Champion: A defensive sword-and-board tactician.

Mage:

  • Evoker: An elemental mage wielding fire, ice, and lightning.
  • Death Caller: A necromancer specializing in advanced spirit magic.
  • Spellblade: A melee mage utilizing magic-infused attacks.

Rogue:

  • Duelist: A swift dual-bladed fighter.
  • Saboteur: An expert in traps and explosives.
  • Veil Hunter: A ranged fighter using lightning magic and a bow.

While the initial specialization availability based on background remains unclear, all six factions will play crucial narrative roles. Faction choice grants three unique traits impacting both combat and non-combat gameplay. Selecting the Lords of Fortune, for example, boosts damage against mercenaries, improves takedowns, and enhances reputation. While appearance is customizable via the Mirror of Transformation, background, lineage, and class remain permanent.

Unlike its predecessors, The Veilguard avoids tedious errands, focusing instead on structured missions reminiscent of classic BioWare titles. Despite its linear structure, the game's innovative design choices remain to be seen, with launch slated for Fall 2024.
