Palworld Live Service Model May Be PocketPair's Best Option
Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe recently spoke with ASCII Japan about Palworld's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning to a live service model. While no firm decisions have been made, Mizobe confirmed ongoing development, including plans for new maps, Pals, and raid bosses.
He outlined two potential paths: completing Palworld as a buy-to-play (B2P) title or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps). Mizobe acknowledged the financial advantages of a live service model, stating it would offer increased profit potential and extend the game's lifespan. However, he also highlighted the significant challenges, primarily because Palworld's initial design wasn't geared towards this model.
A crucial factor in their decision is player preference. Mizobe pointed out the typical live service model involves transitioning from free-to-play (F2P) to adding monetized content like skins and battle passes. Palworld's B2P structure complicates this transition, requiring careful consideration. He cited PUBG and Fall Guys as examples of successful F2P transitions, but emphasized the years of effort involved.
Mizobe also discussed alternative monetization strategies, such as ad monetization. However, he expressed skepticism about its viability for PC games, citing the negative player reaction frequently observed on platforms like Steam.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement and satisfaction while exploring various options. With the recent Sakurajima update and the introduction of PvP arena mode, Palworld remains in its early access phase, and its future direction is still under careful consideration.
