Arrowhead CEO: Helldivers 2 to Remain Focus as Long as Players Engage and Purchase Super Credits
Helldivers 2 developers Arrowhead have addressed player concerns that they might abandon the game in favor of their next project, known as "Game 6." As reported by VG247, CEO Shams Jorjani reassured fans in the official Helldivers Discord following the launch of the full-scale Illuminate invasion this week.
Jorjani expressed gratitude for the community's support, stating, “The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead's future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn't have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you.” This statement raised concerns among some fans, with one suggesting that Arrowhead was diverting resources away from Helldivers 2.
Jorjani quickly dispelled these fears, emphasizing, "Nah. It's ALL Helldivers 2 for now. A very, very small team will spin up something later this year and go at it sloowly. Helldivers is our main focus and will be for a loooong time." He further elaborated on the duration of content updates for Helldivers 2, saying, "As long as you folks keep playing and buying Super Credits we can keep it going," referring to the game's virtual currency used to purchase Premium Warbonds. Jorjani admitted that last summer things were challenging, but thanks to the community's support, the future looks promising.
In a follow-up comment, Jorjani responded to a fan's request for Arrowhead's next game to be available in all regions, avoiding the region-locking issues faced by Helldivers 2. He stated, "The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we'll call 100% of those shots," indicating that Arrowhead will self-fund Game 6 and not partner with Sony or any other company. This suggests that Game 6 is not Helldivers 3.
Jorjani also shared insights into how Game 6's development will differ from the "rough," eight-year development cycle of Helldivers 2. He explained, "For the most part of the development cycle games plain suck. Very seldom are they truly fun from the get-go. And for Helldivers taking eight years to make it was rough for the longest time. But it came together in the end. The ONLY way to know is to playtest playtest playtest. For our next game we're doing things in a much smarter way and nailing a lot of the core s\*\*t early on (as you should) then make the rest."
These comments align with previous statements from Arrowhead developers, who have expressed their desire for Helldivers 2 to remain relevant for years. Notably, Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Despite the game's initial success, it has faced challenges including a U-turn on PSN account requirements on Steam, review-bomb campaigns, and ongoing community feedback regarding game balance.
Alex Bolle, the production director on Helldivers 2, recently told IGN, “we want it to be around for years and years and years to come.” He emphasized the team's commitment to staying true to the game's core fantasy while continuously introducing new features and systems. Bolle also highlighted the excitement of working on live games, stating, "The more we figure out how to thrive in a live environment, and we still have a way to go to figure out a lot of things around that, the more we can let creativity loose on new systems that we would've never thought about a year ago when we released."
Recent leaks, including one from PlayStation itself, suggest that Super Earth may soon become a playable map as the Illuminate invasion progresses to our home planet.
