Here’s a sentence I never imagined writing: a live-action Toys “R” Us movie is officially in development.

As reported by Variety, Story Kitchen—the production house behind many recent video game film adaptations, including the Sonic the Hedgehog series—aims to “capture the childhood magic within a contemporary, high-energy adventure, drawing from the Toys ‘R’ Us brand’s 70-year legacy in the toy industry.”

“Toys ‘R’ Us remains a cultural landmark that still sparks wonder in the child within all of us,” said Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. “As ‘80s kids who saw Toys ‘R’ Us as one of the world’s most enchanting places, we’re proud to collaborate on a film that embodies the adventure, creativity, and nostalgia the brand represents.”

The film is said to draw inspiration from Night at the Museum, Back to the Future, and Big, along with other toy-inspired movie franchises like Barbie. No casting details have been confirmed yet. Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval will produce for Story Kitchen, joined by Kim Miller Olko from Toys “R” Us Studios.

“As the first-ever Toys “R” Us film, this project offers an incredible chance to translate our brand’s enchantment to cinema,” added Miller Olko, president of Toys “R” Us Studios. “It will be a journey as limitless as play itself, channeling the electric sense of wonder that defines Toys “R” Us. This story will reflect the imagination, adventure, and delight that has made Toys “R” Us beloved by generations.”

Last year, Story Kitchen revealed plans for a film based on Square Enix’s Just Cause, with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto attached. It is also developing adaptations of Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, and Sleeping Dogs.
