Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly
Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an unspecified number of team members involved. The news broke through a report by Insider Gaming, which referenced a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who had been part of the project for a year. The post highlighted that the individual was now seeking new employment alongside other talented professionals affected by the cancellation.
IGN independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced project, which was described as a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). This project was spearheaded by a team that previously worked on another canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described the number as "small." Additionally, at least one person associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. The trend started with the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. The situation escalated nearly a year ago when EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. As a result, around two dozen Respawn employees were also let go. Since then, EA has restructured BioWare, shifting developers to other internal projects and laying off additional key personnel.
IGN has sought a statement from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
