Elden Ring Nightreign: Procedurally Generated Terrains
Volcanoes, Poison Swamps, and Forests Await
In an interview featured in PC Gamer Magazine Issue 405 (reported by Games Radar on February 10, 2025), director Junya Ishizaki revealed that Elden Ring Nightreign's map will dynamically generate volcanoes, forests, and swamps.
Expect classic Soulslike challenges: treacherous poison swamps and other environmental hazards will demand strategic adaptations. Ishizaki explained the map will feature "large-scale changes to terrain in the form of procedurally appearing volcanoes, swamps, or forests," creating a constantly evolving world.
The design philosophy centers on making "the map itself a giant dungeon," offering diverse traversal and exploration options with each playthrough. Forested areas, for example, provide cover for both players and enemies, adding a layer of tactical depth.
"Once you've chosen your strategy against a boss, the map's layout might influence your approach. We wanted to give players that agency, that choice: 'I need a poison weapon this time to face this boss.'"
Familiar challenging terrains may return, like the debilitating Swamp of Aeonia and Lake of Rot, known for slowing players and inflicting the Rot debuff. These procedurally generated areas might also introduce specific enemies, such as Giant Lobsters or Crabs, Runebears, Magma Wyrms, or other formidable foes from previous Souls games.
