SAG-AFTRA Strikes Over AI Protections Against Major Video Game Companies
SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Companies: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation
SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, following protracted negotiations. This action highlights crucial concerns about the ethical use of AI and fair compensation for performers.
Key Issues Fueling the Strike:
The central conflict revolves around the burgeoning use of artificial intelligence in video game production. While not inherently opposed to AI, SAG-AFTRA members express deep anxieties about its potential to replace human actors. Specific concerns include:
- Unauthorized AI Replication: The fear of actors' voices and likenesses being replicated without consent or compensation.
- Displacement of Performers: The possibility that AI could take over smaller roles, limiting opportunities for aspiring actors.
- Ethical Concerns: The potential for AI-generated content to contradict an actor's personal values.
Temporary Solutions and New Agreements:
To address the evolving landscape and provide interim solutions, SAG-AFTRA has implemented new agreements:
-
Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA): This agreement, established in February 2024, caters to indie and lower-budget projects ($250,000 - $30 million budget), incorporating AI protections previously rejected by the industry.
-
Interim Interactive Media Agreement & Interim Interactive Localization Agreement: These agreements offer temporary solutions covering various aspects, including compensation, AI usage stipulations, rest periods, and payment terms. Importantly, these agreements exclude expansion packs and DLCs released post-launch. Projects adhering to these agreements are exempt from the strike.
A significant development was a January 2024 side deal with Replica Studios, allowing union actors to license their voice replicas under specific terms, including the right to opt out of perpetual usage.
Negotiation Timeline and Union Resolve:
Negotiations began in October 2022. A 98.32% yes vote on September 24, 2023, overwhelmingly authorized the strike. While progress was made on certain issues, the lack of strong, enforceable AI protections remains the primary obstacle.
SAG-AFTRA leadership emphasizes the industry's substantial profits and the vital role of its members. The union remains resolute in its pursuit of fair treatment and robust AI protections for its members.
The strike underscores the ongoing tension between technological advancement and the rights and livelihoods of creative professionals in the rapidly evolving video game industry.
