Nintendo Guidelines Tighten for Content Creators

Nintendo's recently updated Content Guidelines introduce stricter rules for online content creators, potentially leading to bans for violations. This September 2nd update expands Nintendo's enforcement capabilities beyond DMCA takedowns. They can now proactively remove content and restrict creators from sharing future Nintendo-related content.

Previously, Nintendo primarily addressed content deemed "unlawful, infringing, or inappropriate." The new guidelines clarify prohibited content, adding specific examples: actions disrupting multiplayer gameplay and content considered graphic, explicit, harmful, or offensive.

This stricter approach follows reported takedowns, possibly spurred by an incident involving a Splatoon 3 content creator, Liora Channel. Nintendo removed Liora Channel's video featuring interviews with female players discussing dating experiences within the game. Liora Channel publicly committed to avoiding sexually suggestive Nintendo-related content in the future.

The stricter guidelines aim to address the potential for predatory behavior in online games, particularly those targeting younger audiences. Nintendo's move reflects concerns about the safety of young players, given the influence of content creators and reported incidents of abuse in games like Roblox, as highlighted by Bloomberg.
