Edward Berger's gripping papal thriller Conclave captivated audiences last year, offering a rare glimpse into Catholicism's most secretive ceremony – the ritualized election of a new pope. With real-world cardinals now preparing for an actual conclave, the film's influence has become astonishingly real – several participating religious leaders have reportedly turned to the movie for procedural guidance. According to a Vatican insider who spoke to political news platform Politico, Berger's drama featuring Ralph Fiennes as the College of Cardinals' dean has been praised by clergymen for its "remarkable accuracy." The source revealed some cardinals even attended theatrical screenings of the film before the current proceedings.

The death of Pope Francis in late April – less than six months after the film's release – initiated the official conclave process. Beginning May 7, 133 senior clerics from across the globe will convene in the Sistine Chapel to deliberate and elect Catholicism's next worldwide leader.

Since most participating cardinals were personally appointed by Pope Francis, this marks their first experience with the ancient electoral ritual. For those from smaller, remote dioceses particularly, the film has become an unexpected educational resource for this otherwise inaccessible ceremony.
