"Jump Ship Preview: Sea of Thieves Meets Left 4 Dead, More Polished and Fun"

Author : Sadie May 22,2025

Just over a year ago, I had the privilege of being introduced to Jump Ship at the Game Developer's Conference—a captivating four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that skillfully merges elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL into a unique experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to dive into the latest build alongside the developers, and I'm confident that if any indie game has the potential to make a significant impact in this year's crowded release schedule, Jump Ship is a strong contender. As it gears up for an Early Access launch this Summer, the game has become even more polished and enjoyable.

For those new to Jump Ship, it's a non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. The team at Keepsake Games has listened to feedback and is developing innovative ways for solo players to enjoy the game as well. For those who prefer a single-player experience, narratively crafted AI assistants will help manage the ship, giving players a taste of this in the Prologue. This serves as both a tutorial, introducing you to mechanics such as shooting, space suit flying, ship management, and combat, and a lore-building segment that enriches the gameplay.

A much-appreciated narrative now underpins the core PvE gameplay of Jump Ship. The story revolves around a malicious virus infecting machines across the galaxy, tasking you and your fellow Atirans with reaching the galaxy's core to eradicate it. You'll navigate through procedurally generated mission chains in each sector, with missions lasting from 10 minutes to an hour. The Jump Map's color-coded choices help you gauge the level of danger and potential rewards, ensuring you're always in control of your adventure's intensity.

Assisting you is Iris, an uninfected AI introduced in the Prologue, who serves as a narrator during your missions. This addition provides a welcome structure to the robust gameplay foundation. The Hangar acts as your base of operations, where you can spend in-game currency to customize your outfits, explore the Galaxy Map, and even enjoy a game of soccer in your downtime.

The core four-player gameplay is nothing short of exhilarating. Missions rarely go as planned, requiring dynamic teamwork. One player might pilot the ship and use the pilot's chair weapons, while another mans the ship's 360-degree cannon. Meanwhile, the other two could be mag-booted to the hull, engaging enemy ships. Should your ship take damage, players must rush inside, grab a fire extinguisher, and navigate through vents to extinguish flames—keeping the ship, and its essential pineapple pizza-maker, operational.

Upon reaching your destination, all players disembark to retrieve the coveted loot. The hostile, infected robots pose a constant threat, making teamwork crucial. Your grappling hook facilitates quick movement both on the ground and in space, and once you secure the loot, one player must return it to the ship while others provide cover.

Both my initial demo last year and the recent one were brief, highlighting Jump Ship's ability to deliver fun in short bursts without demanding excessive time commitment. However, I have yet to explore the broader mission structure and the variety promised by procedural generation fully. Nevertheless, everything I've experienced so far suggests Jump Ship has the makings of a potential hit. With all the right elements in place, I eagerly anticipate delving deeper into this promising game.
