In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch shared insights into their latest standalone sequel in the Ghost series. Ghost of Yotei builds on the success of the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima by introducing enhanced gameplay and deeper narrative elements.

Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized the game's unprecedented freedom, stating, "Players can find the location of the Yotei Six on their own and take on the challenge of avenging them." This approach marks a significant shift from the more linear structure of previous games, offering players greater autonomy in their journey.

Last week, the release date for Ghost of Yotei on the PlayStation 5 was announced, set for October 2, 2025. Alongside this, a new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List" was released, giving fans a glimpse into the story and gameplay. The trailer introduced the protagonist, Atsu, on her quest to avenge her family against the Yotei Six.

More Melee Weapons

Expanding on the theme of freedom, Ghost of Yotei also offers a wider array of melee weapons for players to master. Following speculation sparked by the latest trailer, Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed that in addition to the traditional samurai sword, players can now wield the odachi, a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.

Fox highlighted the central role of the sword but noted that other weapons can be acquired through interactions with various teachers and masters throughout the game's expansive world. He also pointed out that unlike its predecessor, where the samurai's honor was a focal point, Atsu's character allows for a more flexible combat style. "She can use whatever is available on the field," Fox explained, adding that players can even pick up and throw weapons dropped by defeated enemies, albeit with certain limitations.

Ezo as the Setting

Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603, around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (present-day Hokkaido). According to Cornell, this setting offers a "balance of a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature."

The game will also feature a representation of the Ainu culture, an indigenous group native to northern Japan. To ensure authenticity, the developers conducted thorough research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with experts on Ainu culture. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's breathtaking scenery, which motivated the team to bring this setting to life for players worldwide.

Ghost of Tsushima, the game's predecessor, was praised for its accurate portrayal of Japanese culture and history. Ghost of Yotei aims to continue this tradition, showcasing the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."

Ghost of Yotei will launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates and detailed information about the game.
