This June's release includes a fully draftable, Standard-legal set, plus the four Commander decks shown above. Each deck boasts 100 cards: reprints with new Final Fantasy art and brand-new cards designed for Commander play. Each deck focuses on a single Final Fantasy game.
Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt explains the deck design: "Final Fantasy games are brimming with rich lore, beloved characters, and unique settings. Focusing on a single game for each deck allowed us to delve deep into each world, capturing iconic moments we might not have otherwise."
The game selection balanced gameplay desires with story recognition. While FFVII and FFXIV were easy choices, FFVI and FFX required more deliberation, ultimately chosen due to team favorites. Holt emphasizes the team's passion: "Everyone was invested, as we have many passionate Final Fantasy fans on the team."
FFVII's deck blends the original game's narrative with the aesthetic of the Remake trilogy. Principal Narrative Game Designer Dillon Deveney clarifies: "We captured the original's story, using Remake's modern style to enhance character designs and locations. We aimed for a nostalgic feel for both original and Remake fans."
FFVI's pixel art presented a unique challenge. Deveney explains their approach: "We worked with concept and card artists to blend elements from Amano's concept art, original sprites, and the Pixel Remaster. We collaborated with the FFVI team for feedback, ensuring core elements were preserved while incorporating new ideas."
Commander deck leaders were carefully selected. While Cloud was an obvious choice for FFVII, other selections involved brainstorming. Celes was considered for FFVI, and Yuna for FFX. Ultimately, they chose the main characters. For the MMO FFXIV, Y'shtola was chosen for her popularity, spellcasting abilities, and rich storyline, specifically her Shadowbringers arc.
Deck color identities were strategically chosen. All four decks include White, enhancing theming and allowing for a wider range of heroes. FFVI focuses on graveyard strategies, reflecting the game's latter half. FFVII's red-white-green combination incorporates equipment, "power matters" cards, and references to the Planet and lifestream. FFX's white-blue-green deck reflects the Sphere Grid system. FFXIV's white-blue-black identity emphasizes spellcasting and key characters.
Supporting characters are also featured. Holt states: "Final Fantasy is full of memorable characters, both heroes and villains. Fans can expect to see many favorites in the 99 cards beyond the commander."
The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th. All sixteen mainline games will be represented across the accompanying products. Each of the four Commander decks will be available in regular ($69.99 MSRP) and Collector's Edition ($149.99 MSRP) versions, with the latter featuring Surge foil treatment for all 100 cards.
