FBC: Firebreak - The Unexpected Multiplayer FPS Hit

Author : Sarah Mar 26,2025

When Remedy Entertainment, renowned for crafting compelling single-player narratives in third-person games, announced their foray into multiplayer with *FBC: Firebreak*, skepticism was understandable. However, after witnessing a hands-off demo, it's clear that *FBC: Firebreak* is poised to redefine the genre. Set six years post-*Control*, this three-player PvE first-person multiplayer shooter brings refreshing originality and a delightfully weird twist to the often repetitive military and sci-fi dominated online shooter space. Importantly, *FBC: Firebreak* sidesteps the need for daily check-ins or monthly grinds, as emphasized by game director Mike Kayatta: "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." This commitment to player freedom and enjoyment is a breath of fresh air.

In *FBC: Firebreak*, you dive into a cooperative FPS experience that doesn't demand long sessions. Whether you play for 20 minutes or a few hours, the game keeps things exciting with Perk unlocks and new character combinations. The setting? The Oldest House, where you're thrust into the role of volunteer first responders tackling crises with bizarre weaponry. Your characters are ordinary folks—secretaries, rangers, and more—called to action when things go haywire. The Federal Bureau of Control might not call you expendable, but the stakes are high nonetheless.

Upon logging in, you select a Job (mission) and a Crisis Kit (your loadout), set the Threat Level (difficulty), and Clearance Level, which dictates the number of zones you'll navigate. These zones are segmented by containment doors leading to the next stage of your Job. The demo showcased a mission named "Paper Chase" set in a mundane office section of the FBC building, where you and your team combat the spreading Hiss. Escape is an option, but to upgrade and acquire new gear, you'll need to safely retrieve currency, a task that becomes riskier the longer you explore.

*FBC: Firebreak* distinguishes itself further with its weaponry. From hand-cranked snowball launchers to zappers that can unleash lightning storms, the arsenal boasts a charmingly homebrew feel. Yet, classic weapons like machine guns and shotguns remain, essential for tackling unique threats such as the sticky-note monsters—a central focus of the "Paper Chase" mission. The objective? Eliminate the notes before they overrun the building, culminating in a battle against a colossal sticky-note monster reminiscent of Spider-Man 3's Sandman.

Beyond its quirky weapons, *FBC: Firebreak* introduces engaging in-universe mechanics. Ammo refills from office supply shelves, makeshift turrets, stereo speakers to repel the Hiss, and rinse stations to clear sticky notes from your face enhance the gameplay. Unlockable Perks add depth, such as the chance for missed bullets to return to your clip or the ability to extinguish yourself by jumping. Stack Perks for stronger effects, and share them with teammates to boost your collective strength.

Flexibility is key, as *FBC: Firebreak* supports solo, duo, or trio play. Remedy aims for lower minimum PC specs, while also supporting advanced features like DLSS4, multi-frame generation, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. The game will be Steam Deck verified and launch on Xbox and PC Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Extra, and Premium on day one. While post-launch content plans remain undisclosed, expect paid cosmetics as the only microtransactions.
