Counter-Strike Co-Creator Praises Valve's Role
Le Commends Valve for Preserving Counter-Strike's Legacy
In a recent interview with Spillhistorie.no commemorating Counter-Strike's 25th anniversary, Minh "Gooseman" Le, one of the game's creators, shared his positive assessment of Valve's involvement. Le and his partner, Jess Cliffe, created this hugely popular first-person shooter, now a genre classic.
Le highlighted Valve's crucial role in Counter-Strike's phenomenal success. Reflecting on the decision to sell the IP, he stated, "I'm pleased with how things unfolded with Valve. They've expertly maintained CS's legacy."
The transition to Steam wasn't without its hurdles. Le recalled, "Steam initially had significant stability problems; there were periods when players couldn't even log in." Despite these early technical difficulties, he acknowledged the invaluable support of the community in stabilizing the platform. "The community's assistance was crucial; many users created helpful guides that smoothed the transition," he explained.
Le's journey began in 1998, while an undergraduate, developing Counter-Strike as a Half-Life mod.
"My inspiration came from classic arcade games like Virtua Cop and Time Crisis, along with action films such as John Woo's work and Hollywood titles like Heat, Ronin, Air Force One, and the Tom Clancy adaptations of the 90s," he revealed. Cliffe joined the project in 1999, focusing on map design.
Counter-Strike's 25th anniversary on June 19th underscored its enduring appeal. Counter-Strike 2, the latest iteration, boasts a massive monthly player base of nearly 25 million. Valve's dedication has ensured the game's continued prosperity in a fiercely competitive FPS market.
Le expressed deep gratitude for Valve's handling of his creation. "It's been incredibly humbling, given my high regard for Valve. Working with them was a valuable learning experience; I collaborated with top-tier developers, acquiring skills I wouldn't have gained elsewhere," he concluded.
