Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - A Modern Take on Classic JRPGs

Turn-Based Combat with Real-Time Reactions

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Unique GameplaySet against the backdrop of Belle Epoque France, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 masterfully combines turn-based strategy with real-time action. Heavily influenced by iconic titles like Final Fantasy and Persona, the game aims to create a fresh and engaging experience.

Creative director Guillaume Broche, speaking with Eurogamer, revealed his passion for turn-based combat and the desire to create a visually stunning game in this style. He cited Persona (Atlus) and Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) as stylistic inspirations, highlighting their nostalgic appeal and high-quality visuals.

Exploring the World of Clair ObscurThe game's narrative centers around preventing the mysterious Paintress from unleashing death once more. Players will explore unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, while engaging in combat that demands both strategic planning and quick reflexes. While turn-based commands are used, players must also react in real-time to enemy attacks. This system has drawn comparisons to Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.

Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception, stating he anticipated interest from turn-based fans but not the level of excitement the game has generated.

While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series, specifically the FFVIII, FFIX, and FFX era, played a more significant role in shaping the game's development. He emphasized that the game is not a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal experiences and tastes cultivated by these classic titles. The team also drew inspiration from Persona's dynamic camera movements and menus, aiming for a similar dynamic feel while maintaining a unique art style.

Character Customization and ExplorationIn the open world, players have complete control over their party, switching between characters seamlessly and utilizing unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche encourages experimentation, even suggesting players try "crazy builds and stupid combinations."

The development team expressed their hope to create a game that resonates with players in the same way classic RPGs impacted their lives.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
