This accolade follows the reveal of innovative gameplay mechanics designed to enhance the campaign experience. Read on to discover more about this exciting development and the new features in Civ VII.
PC Gamer's "Most Wanted" Event Highlights Civ VII
On December 6th, PC Gamer's PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted announced Civilization VII as the number one most anticipated game of 2025. This prestigious ranking comes from a vote by "The Council," a panel of over 70 developers, content creators, and PC Gamer editors. The three-hour livestream showcased the top 25 upcoming games, including new trailers and content for titles like Let’s Build a Dungeon and Drivers of the Apocalypse.
Doom: The Dark Ages and Monster Hunter Wilds secured second and third place, respectively, while Slay the Spire 2 took fourth. Other notable titles on the list included Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, The Thing: Remastered, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Interestingly, Hollow Knight: Silksong was absent from the list and its trailer was not shown.
New "Ages" Mechanic Enhances Campaign Completion in Civ VII
Addressing player feedback regarding campaign completion rates in Civ VI, Civ VII's Creative Director, Ed Beach, unveiled a new game mechanic called "Ages" in a PC Gamer interview. The new system divides campaigns into three distinct eras: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern.
"We saw data showing many players never finished Civilization games," Beach explained. "So we aimed to reduce micromanagement and restructure the game to directly address this."
The "Ages" mechanic allows players to transition to a historically or geographically linked civilization at the end of each era, mirroring the rise and fall of real-world empires. While players switch civilizations, their leader remains the same, providing continuity. An "overbuild" feature allows construction atop existing structures, with some buildings and Wonders persisting throughout the game.
This innovative approach offers players a fresh perspective on cultural, military, diplomatic, and economic strategies within a single playthrough, maintaining a strong connection to their chosen leader. Civilization VII launches simultaneously on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 11, 2025.
