PlayStation Classics Land on Nintendo Switch!

Author : Allison Feb 02,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to a dwindling supply of retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, boasting a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a floppy-eared cat-like creature traversing a dream world to thwart a looming threat. It features vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are essential.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and a key driver of the PlayStation's dominance. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation giant, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries embraced more eccentric elements, the original remains a standout, offering a thrilling, action-packed adventure reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series to 3D. Although the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains intact. The game's vibrant colors, unique enemy capture mechanic, and imaginative bosses create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While I could fill this list with Square Enix games, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VII represent a balanced selection. Though it couldn't quite match the popularity of Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross stands on its own merits as a visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit sometimes underdeveloped, cast of characters and one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I enjoy most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests recommending only a few to newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 boasts superior cohesion compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to experience these titles firsthand.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Many PlayStation first-party titles weren't actually owned by Sony. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins developer, it initially appears easy but presents a challenging experience.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port of Grandia forms the basis of the HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-inspired RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' previous work.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. While personal preference might lean towards the original's focus on tomb raiding, this collection allows players to decide for themselves.

moon ($18.99)

A deeper cut, moon (originally Japan-only) deconstructs the RPG genre. More of an adventure game, it's described as an "anti-RPG," offering a unique, sometimes challenging, yet thought-provoking experience.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts below! Thanks for reading!
