Recent reports confirm the departure of showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. While multiple scripts were reportedly completed, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.

Despite this major shakeup, the project remains alive. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director), along with other key executive producers (Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions, Roy Lee from Vertigo, and Yumi Yang from Santa Monica Studio), will continue their involvement. The search is now on for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to reshape the series' direction.

Looking Ahead: Delays, But Continued Development

Initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, the God of War adaptation follows the success of the 2018 game reboot. This project is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises for film and television, a strategy spearheaded by PlayStation Productions (founded in 2019). This initiative has already yielded successful adaptations such as Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023, with season 2 slated for 2025), and the Gran Turismo film (2023). Furthermore, Twisted Metal debuted this year.

Other projects in various stages of development include Horizon Zero Dawn (Netflix), Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film (April 25, 2025).
