Death Note: Killer Within – A Social Deduction Game Inspired by Among Us
November 5th Release Date Confirmed
Following recent ratings in Taiwan, speculation surrounding a new Death Note game has finally been confirmed. Death Note: Killer Within arrives on PC, PS4, and PS5 on November 5th, and will be included as a free PlayStation Plus title for that month.Developed by Grounding, Inc. and published by Bandai Namco, this online-only game pits players against each other in a battle of wits and deception. Players choose a side: Kira, the notorious killer, or L, the detective determined to stop him. Up to ten players per game will engage in a high-stakes game of deception, similar to Among Us, requiring deduction, strategy, and a bit of luck to win. As Bandai Namco states on the official website, the Death Note itself is hidden among the players, creating a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase.
Extensive customization options are available, with players able to unlock seven types of accessories and special effects. While online-only, voice chat is highly recommended for coordination and, of course, dramatic accusations!
Pricing Unannounced – Potential for a Fall Guys-Like Launch?
The game's inclusion in the PlayStation Plus lineup provides early access for subscribers. It will be joined by Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged. PC players can access the game via Steam, with cross-play functionality ensuring a larger player base.
However, the price for non-subscribers remains undisclosed. Concerns exist that an overly high price point could hinder its success against established competition like Among Us, potentially mirroring the initial struggles of Fall Guys. The comparison to Fall Guys, which initially launched at a premium price on PlayStation Plus before becoming free-to-play, highlights the potential risks of pricing. The strength of the Death Note IP, however, may help the game overcome this hurdle.
Gameplay Mechanics: Action and Meeting Phases
Gameplay is divided into two phases, echoing Among Us' structure. The "Action Phase" sees players navigating virtual environments, gathering clues, and completing tasks while observing suspicious behavior. Kira can secretly use the Death Note to eliminate NPCs or players. The "Meeting Phase" allows players to discuss their findings, vote on suspected Kiris, and potentially bring them to justice (or wrongly accuse an innocent player).
Unlike Among Us, Kira has followers who can communicate privately and steal IDs – a key element given the importance of names in the game. Kira can even pass the Death Note to a follower. Investigators work to uncover clues, narrowing down the suspects.
L possesses unique abilities, such as installing surveillance cameras during the Action Phase and influencing discussions during the Meeting Phase. Success hinges on teamwork and deception. The potential for exciting streamer content and memorable friend interactions is significant.
