Civ 7 Hits Steam, Faces Backlash Over Early Access

Civilization 7 Steam Edition Faces Wave of Negative Feedback During Early Access

Civilization 7 currently holds a "mostly negative" rating on Steam following feedback from players testing the advanced access version. Here's what's fueling the widespread criticism.

Civ 7 Receives Overwhelming Negative Reception During Early Access

Steam Players Voice Concerns Over UI Design, Map Options, and Resource Systems

Civilization 7 Steam Ratings Plunge Following Early Access Release

Civilization 7 launched its Advanced Access five days ahead of its scheduled February 11 release, but Steam players paying premium prices express dissatisfaction, resulting in the game's poor reception.

Initially met with great anticipation - being the first new installment since Civ 6 debuted in 2016 - enthusiasm has cooled considerably with the current "Mostly Negative" Steam rating stemming from consistent complaints.

Civilization 7 Players Criticize Interface and Gameplay Changes

The primary complaint centers on the game's User Interface (UI), with numerous players describing it as "clunky" and "visually unappealing" compared to Civ 6. Some have gone so far as comparing the UI to "low-quality mobile game adaptations." Several reviewers speculate Firaxis Games prioritized console compatibility over PC refinement, resulting in a simplified interface.

The game's map system also drew criticism regarding selection mechanics, limited map variety, restrictive sizing options, and minimal customization features. Players note the interface fails to provide adequate information when browsing available map types.

Civ 7 currently offers just three map sizes (Small, Medium, Large) compared to Civ 6's five configurations supporting diverse playstyles.

Civilization 7 Resource System Controversy Explained

The redesigned resource management system sparked debate by introducing strategic empire-wide allocation instead of Civ 6's territory-based collection. This fundamental change allegedly reduces replay value according to longtime series fans.

Firaxis Games responded publicly to criticisms, stating: "We acknowledge the UI feedback and are actively working on improvements. Civilization VII will continue evolving through updates and expansions - we appreciate your constructive input regarding map preferences and other features."
