CD Projekt Prioritizes Niche AAA Open-World RPGs
Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of CD Projekt Red (the studio behind The Witcher 3), revealed the company has embraced its specialization: creating "AAA open-world RPGs with strong narratives."
During the studio's AnsweRed podcast, Iwiński and joint-CEO Adam Badowski discussed CD Projekt's evolution, acknowledging past experimentation with other genres before reaffirming their core strength lies in expansive RPG experiences.
"Through experience, we've realized the importance of absolute focus," Iwiński emphasized. "While creative exploration is tempting, we now channel our efforts exclusively into what we excel at - delivering exceptional narrative-driven RPGs with complete dedication."
Badowski expanded: "Our shift to multiple concurrent projects aligns with this strategy. Every development effort reinforces our commitment to mastering this specific genre - it's become our signature approach."
"The discipline seems straightforward," Iwiński noted, "but scaling brings constant distractions. We've learned to resist chasing trends and instead double down on our proven formula to maintain quality."
"Innovation remains crucial," Badowski added, "but must be carefully integrated. Initial enthusiasm alone doesn't sustain development - thoughtful execution does."
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has achieved staggering success, with over 60 million copies sold when combining base game and Game of the Year edition sales (excluding separate expansion purchases).
