BG3 Patch 7: Over 1M Mods Installed
Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Baldur's Gate 3's recently released Patch 7 has ignited a modding frenzy, with an astounding number of community-created modifications downloaded shortly after its launch.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke reported over one million mod installations within 24 hours on Twitter (X), highlighting the significant impact of modding on the game's post-launch success. This figure was quickly surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis confirming over three million installations and counting.
This surge in mod usage is directly attributable to Patch 7's introduction of Larian's official Mod Manager, a user-friendly in-game tool simplifying mod browsing, installation, and management. The patch also included substantial new content, such as evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and various quality-of-life improvements.
Prior to Patch 7, modding tools were available as a separate Steam application, enabling modders to leverage Larian's Osiris scripting language to craft custom narratives, scripts, and perform basic debugging. The ability to directly publish mods from the toolkit further streamlines the modding process.
Expanding Modding Horizons: Cross-Platform Compatibility
A community-developed "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked," featuring a level editor and reactivated development features, has emerged on Nexus, showcasing the community's ingenuity and pushing the boundaries of modding capabilities. While Larian initially limited full access to its development tools, citing their focus on game development rather than tool creation, the enthusiastic community response demonstrates a clear demand for broader access.
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the complexities involved in ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. The initial focus will be on the PC version, with console support following after addressing potential issues and navigating platform-specific submission processes.
Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 delivered a plethora of enhancements, including refined UI elements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and numerous bug fixes and performance optimizations. With ongoing updates planned, players can anticipate further developments, including potentially more details on the studio's cross-platform modding roadmap.
