First revealed at the recently concluded PlayStation State of Play, the hack-and-slash action-adventure game Tides of Annihilation has ignited further interest with its newly released extended gameplay trailer.

The trailer offers early development gameplay footage, featuring protagonist Gwendolyn and her sword-transforming companion, Niniane, as they navigate the ruins of a desolate, otherworldly London ravaged by an Outworld invasion. As they venture through the crumbling streets, they encounter various enemies. It is then revealed that Gwendolyn possesses the ability to summon a band of over ten legendary knights, inspired by King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

After clearing the path of foes and further exploration through a magical portal, the duo is drawn into a boss fight with a character named Mordred, whose goals conflict with Gwendolyn's. The boss fight highlights the game's action-packed combat, enhanced by a haunting choir singing in the background, before reaching its conclusion.

According to Kun Fu, the game’s producer, as mentioned on the PlayStation.Blog, the battle system will feature "intuitive co-op combat in a single-player experience." Players can summon two spectral knights with distinct combat roles at a time, necessitating strategic planning based on the situation. "The interplay between Gwendolyn and the knights creates a dynamic, fast-paced, and deeply engaging combat experience. It’s a system that our team (veterans from top game studios) fell in love with during internal playtests."

Viewers have taken to the video's comments to laud its content, including the art direction, style, and the fluid, fast-paced hack-and-slash combat. Comparisons to classic franchises like Devil May Cry (DMC) and Bayonetta, as well as modern titles like Elden Ring, NieR: Automata, Stellar Blade, and Final Fantasy 16, have been made. Tides of Annihilation is the debut title from Chengdu-based game studio Eclipse Glow Games, blending Arthurian legend with an alternate modern-day London. While no specific release window has been set, the game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
