The cast for Star Wars: Starfighter is coming together, with Mia Goth reportedly joining Ryan Gosling in the upcoming science fiction film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goth, best known for her roles as Maxine Minx and Pearl in the X horror film series, will portray a villain in the Star Wars movie directed by Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy. Production is scheduled to begin in England this fall, with a release date set for May 28, 2027.

THR states that Gosling's character "must protect his young nephew from dangerous pursuers," one of whom is Goth's character. Lucasfilm has declined to comment on the report.

Regarding the timeline, Starfighter is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, the final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. However, director Levy has emphasized that the film stands on its own. "This is a standalone story—not a prequel or a sequel," he explained at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in April. "It’s a new adventure set in a previously unexplored era."

Starfighter is set to be the next Star Wars film following 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. The title shares its name with a series of short-lived video games from the PS2 and Xbox era, including Star Wars: Starfighter (2001) and its sequel, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter (2002). However, the movie is not expected to draw plot elements from these games.

The Rise of Skywalker concludes with the final defeat of Emperor Palpatine but offers little detail about the galaxy's state after the Battle of Exegol. Daisy Ridley is confirmed to reprise her role in a sequel directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which follows Rey as she works to rebuild the Jedi Order approximately 15 years after the events of the previous film. Starfighter, in contrast, takes place earlier in the timeline.
