'We Have Not Modified It' — The Witcher 4 Director Responds to Speculation CD Projekt Changed Ciri's Face
The Witcher 4 director clarifies Ciri's in-game model: no changes made. Following the release of a behind-the-scenes video showcasing Ciri, fans noted perceived differences in her facial appearance compared to the reveal trailer. This sparked online discussion, with some suggesting a redesign.
However, game director Sebastian Kalemba confirmed via social media that Ciri's in-game model remains unchanged. The discrepancies stem from the behind-the-scenes footage showing "raw footage" – lacking the final cinematic lighting, animation, and camera effects applied to the reveal trailer. He emphasized that variations in a character's appearance are normal throughout development, depending on the context (trailer, 3D model, in-game).
This clarifies earlier speculation that the initial "backlash" regarding Ciri's appearance in the reveal trailer prompted a model alteration. The differences, Kalemba explains, are simply a result of the development process.
The Witcher 4, the first in a new trilogy, features Ciri as the protagonist, a decision both Kalemba and executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga defend as a natural progression from the books and Witcher 3. They highlight Ciri's potential for character development and the narrative opportunities this offers. Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle also expressed his enthusiasm for Ciri taking the lead. Further exclusive content on The Witcher 4, including a trailer breakdown and discussion on avoiding a repeat of Cyberpunk 2077's launch issues, is available.
