Ubisoft's "Alterra" Social Sim Mimics Minecraft

Ubisoft Montreal, renowned for titles like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Far Cry 6, is reportedly developing a new voxel-based game codenamed "Alterra." Insider Gaming's November 26th article revealed this project, a successor to a previously cancelled four-year development.

This innovative title blends the social simulation aspects of Animal Crossing with the construction mechanics reminiscent of Minecraft. Players interact with "Matterlings," unique characters resembling Funko Pops, inhabiting a home island. Beyond the island, diverse biomes await exploration, each offering unique building materials and encounters with both friendly and hostile Matterlings. The game's voxel-based nature allows for detailed environmental interaction, similar to meticulously crafting structures from digital LEGO bricks.

The development team includes Fabien Lhéraud, a 24-year Ubisoft veteran serving as lead producer, and Patrick Redding, creative director with experience on titles such as Gotham Knights and Splinter Cell Blacklist. Development commenced in December 2020 and has been ongoing for over 18 months.

While exciting, this information remains preliminary. "Alterra" is still in development and subject to change. The game's unique voxel engine, distinct from Minecraft's pseudo-voxel approach, promises a visually rich and interactive world. Unlike polygon-based games where clipping through objects reveals empty space, "Alterra's" voxel construction ensures solid, volumetric objects. This innovative approach, coupled with its compelling blend of social simulation and construction elements, makes "Alterra" a highly anticipated upcoming title.
