Urgent Patch Needed for Oblivion Remastered: Camera Glitches Cause Crashes

Oblivion Remastered has seen a blockbuster launch, boasting over 4 million players and a ‘very positive’ Steam review score. Yet, persistent performance challenges continue to surface.

Digital Foundry conducted an in-depth review of Oblivion Remastered across console platforms, identifying widespread issues. DF’s Thomas Morgan commented on Virtuos’ Unreal Engine 5 upgrade:

No console escapes these problems: PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series consoles all face stuttering during open-world exploration. Additionally, frame rates frequently drop below 60fps, with performance worsening over extended play—likely due to a memory leak. Worst of all, frequent crashes to the system menu occur when loading saves too often.

What does this look like in-game? According to DF, longer play sessions degrade performance compared to a fresh start. Repeatedly loading saves also triggers bugs, Morgan noted. Curiously, this causes the camera to sit too high during horseback riding, though restarting the game resolves this.

The potential memory leak causing performance decline over time is particularly alarming. Crashes triggered by excessive save loads also pose a major concern.

Players and analysts hope Bethesda swiftly resolves these issues, as extended playtime in this vast fantasy RPG increases the likelihood of encountering these problems.

“The remaster’s current state is concerning, and Virtuos must prioritize fixing these crashes,” Morgan emphasized.

Digital Foundry’s analysis raises tough questions, suggesting Oblivion Remastered may have been rushed to release. A hotfix for Xbox Series X has been issued, but PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro versions still await updates.
