Author : Skylar Apr 23,2025

Stardew Valley is a game that celebrates the joys of farming and rural life, but it's not just about planting and harvesting crops. As players progress in their Farming skill, they unlock the ability to transform their produce into high-value artisan goods using specialized equipment. Among the most popular tools for this purpose are Kegs and Preserves Jars, which allow players to turn their fruits and vegetables into valuable products that can significantly boost their profits. Let's delve into a detailed comparison of Kegs and Preserves Jars to see which might be better suited for your farm.

Kegs IconKegs and Preserves Jars IconPreserves Jars are essential for turning crops into Artisan Goods that can multiply their value. But which one is better? Let's explore the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Updated January 8, 2025, by Demaris Oxman: The 1.6 update has brought significant changes to Stardew Valley, including updates to what can be processed in Kegs and Preserves Jars. Now, players can use various forage items like Leeks, Spring Onions, Hazelnuts, Winter Roots, and more to create Juice or Pickles. This guide has been updated to include these new options and provide comprehensive advice on maximizing artisan goods production.

Basics of Kegs and Preserves Jars

Kegs and Preserves Jars in UseBoth Preserves Jars and Kegs are vital for transforming produce and other items into valuable artisan goods. This is particularly lucrative for players with the Artisan profession, which boosts the sell price of these goods by 40%.

It's crucial to understand that the quality of the input item does not affect the quality or sell price of the final artisan product. For instance, a Jelly made from a gold-quality fruit sells for the same price as one made from a normal-quality fruit. Therefore, it's advisable to use lower-quality items in both Preserves Jars and Kegs to maximize the value of your higher-quality produce.

Preserves Jars

Preserves Jars are used to create canned products like Jelly IconJelly, Pickles IconPickles, Aged Roe IconAged Roe, and Caviar IconCaviar. Players can obtain Preserves Jars through rewards from the Quality Crops or Rare Crops bundles at the community center, or as prizes from the Prize Machine. Kegs or Preserves Jars: Which Is Better?

Pros & Cons of Kegs

Kegs in UseKegs typically yield higher profits than Preserves Jars. For instance, turning fruit into Wine is far more lucrative than making Jelly. Additionally, alcoholic beverages produced in Kegs can be aged in Cask IconCasks to increase their quality and sell price, with Iridium-quality products fetching double the normal price.

However, Kegs are more expensive and time-consuming to craft. They require metal bars, Tappers, and Oak Resin, and aging products in Casks involves additional costs and time. Kegs also have a longer processing time than Preserves Jars, which can impact overall profitability if not managed carefully.

Pros & Cons of Preserves Jars

Preserves Jars in UsePreserves Jars are more affordable and easier to craft, making them ideal for early-game farmers. They can generate substantial income before players unlock Kegs. Although many switch to Kegs due to higher profit margins, Preserves Jars remain valuable for their quick processing times.

For crops with lower base prices, like Blueberry IconBlueberries, using Preserves Jars can be more profitable due to faster turnaround times. Fruits with a base price of 50g or less and vegetables with a base price of 200g or less are best suited for Preserves Jars.

It's also important to note that some items can only be processed in one type of equipment. For example, Roe can only be turned into Aged Roe or Caviar in Preserves Jars, while Honey can only be turned into Mead in Kegs. Therefore, having both types of equipment on your farm is crucial for maximizing the value of all your produce.
