Space Marine 2 Dev Clarifies: Not Abandoning Game Amid Space Marine 3 Buzz
The unexpected announcement of the development of Space Marine 3 sent ripples of excitement and concern throughout the Warhammer 40,000 community, especially given its timing just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made the announcement in mid-March, sparking discussions about the future content and support for Space Marine 2.
In response to community concerns, both companies issued a blog post reassuring fans that Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of support for Space Marine 2. They emphasized their commitment to continuing development and support for the current game. "Mid-March, we announced that Space Marine 3 had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support," the statement read. They clarified that no development teams are shifting focus, and they remain dedicated to enhancing Space Marine 2.
The blog post also detailed the future plans for Space Marine 2, including the release of Patch 7 in mid-April and the introduction of a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. The companies teased that there are still surprises in store, hinting at content that even dataminers haven't uncovered yet.
The announcement of Space Marine 3 marks the beginning of a new project, which is years away from release. The developers expressed gratitude for the community's excitement and support, which fuels their motivation. "Many of you were very excited for this project and this makes us incredibly happy and motivated. Thank you for the unwavering support," they stated.
The highlight of the upcoming content for Space Marine 2 is the new class, with speculation leaning towards the Apothecary, akin to a medic class, or the Librarian, which would introduce warp-powered abilities. Fans are also eager about the new melee weapon, with many hoping for the iconic axe featured in Secret Level's Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, which modders have already brought into the game.
The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 comes on the heels of Space Marine 2's success. In an interview with IGN following the launch of Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits hinted at the potential for story DLC and shared that ideas for Space Marine 3 were already in discussion. He mentioned that game director Dmitry Grigorenko had proposed story ideas that could serve as either DLC or a sequel, suggesting a continuation of the narrative and the introduction of new enemy factions.
This comprehensive approach to both games demonstrates Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive's commitment to the Warhammer 40,000 universe and their fans, ensuring that both Space Marine 2 and the upcoming Space Marine 3 will offer rich, engaging experiences.
