Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice, Suggests Leaked Shipping Data

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unconventional function: computer mouse emulation. While the practicality of this feature for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, known for uncovering Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This source has previously yielded numerous Switch 2 rumors.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed entries detailing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at a potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were mentioned. These haven't been found in public databases, implying they are new, unreleased products. The data indicates both tapes are 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of each Joy-Con, though likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While novel for Nintendo, mouse-like controller modes exist. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to facilitate this mode.

The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers, a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console approach.
