Halo-meets-Portal Shooter Splitgate Announces Sequel!
Splitgate 2: The "Halo Meets Portal" Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the hit multiplayer FPS Splitgate, has announced a highly anticipated sequel launching in 2025. Prepare for a fresh take on portal-powered arena combat in the Sol Splitgate League.
A Familiar Feeling, a Brand New Game
Revealed on July 18th with a cinematic trailer, Splitgate 2 aims for longevity, designed to thrive for a decade or more. While inspired by classic arena shooters, the developers have rebuilt the core gameplay loop for a deeper, more satisfying experience. Their goal, as CEO Ian Proulx explains, was to evolve beyond the original's formula. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlights a reimagined portal system, aiming for both expert and casual player enjoyment.
Built with Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 introduces a faction system alongside familiar elements, promising a completely revitalized feel. Expect it on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
From Humble Beginnings to a Grand Sequel
The original Splitgate, often described as a blend of Halo and Portal, quickly gained popularity after its demo release, boasting 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its initial success led to server upgrades to handle the massive player base. After a period in early access, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, with the developers announcing a halt to updates to focus on creating Splitgate 2.
New Factions, Maps, and More
The Sol Splitgate League takes center stage, introducing three distinct factions: Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While adding depth, Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.
Gameplay details remain under wraps until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the trailer showcases impressive visuals and confirms features like dual-wielding and unique portal trails.
Dive into the Lore
While Splitgate 2 will lack a single-player campaign, a mobile companion app will offer comics, character cards, and a faction quiz to deepen player immersion in the game's world.
