Prime Video Cancels The Wheel of Time After Season 3

The epic fantasy journey of The Wheel of Time has concluded on Prime Video, with Amazon announcing the show's cancellation after Season 3.

Why Was The Wheel of Time Cancelled?

According to Deadline, Prime Video made the difficult decision following "lengthy deliberations" about the show's future. While Amazon executives reportedly admired the series, they ultimately couldn't justify the financial commitment needed for another season.

The adaptation of Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy saga, starring Rosamund Pike, initially faced criticism from book fans for its departures from the source material in Seasons 1 and 2. However, Season 3 managed to win over most critics and fans alike, setting the stage for what many believed would be an exciting future.

PlayThe cancellation comes as particularly disappointing given how much of Jordan's expansive story remains untold. Many felt the series was just hitting its stride in terms of world-building and narrative momentum.

The Financial Reality

The high production costs proved prohibitive for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios - the latter of which also invests heavily in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

"Season 3's overall performance didn't sufficiently justify the show's substantial budget for Prime Video to greenlight another season, even after exploring various options with lead studio Sony TV," according to Deadline's sources.

IGN awarded Season 3 an 8/10 score, praising: "The Wheel of Time finally realizes its full potential this season, delivering a rich tapestry of characters finding their roles in Robert Jordan's intricate fantasy universe."

What's Next for The Wheel of Time?

While the television adaptation has ended, fans can look forward to an upcoming AAA open-world RPG being developed by iwot Studios, who currently hold The Wheel of Time rights. IGN has conducted exclusive interviews with the developers about this new project.
