Following the warm reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation is rife about which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With Fallout 3 rumored for a revival, leaked in 2023, what enhancements might Bethesda bring to its 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?

Bruce Nesmith, a key designer on Fallout 3, highlighted the game’s outdated gun combat, predicting significant improvements in a potential remaster.

In a conversation with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered would feature shooting mechanics aligned with those in Fallout 4.

“Look at Fallout 4’s changes to understand what Bethesda deemed necessary to overhaul from Fallout 3,” Nesmith explained.

“Fallout 4 saw extensive work on gun combat, as Fallout 3 was Bethesda’s first attempt at a shooter-style game. The improvements made were remarkable.”

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by remake experts Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts a host of visual and gameplay upgrades. It delivers 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside refined leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and menus. New dialogue, enhanced third-person perspective, and advanced lip sync technology have also been added. Fans are thrilled, with some arguing Oblivion Remastered feels more like a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its choice to pursue a remaster approach.

Nesmith indicated that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely incorporate similar enhancements, mirroring Oblivion’s upgrades.

“Fallout 3’s combat didn’t match the shooters of its era,” he noted. “It’s an RPG shooter, not a fast-paced action game, but Fallout 4’s combat improvements were substantial. I expect those advancements to carry over, assuming Bethesda follows a similar path.”

“Oblivion wasn’t just updated to match Skyrim’s 2011 standards,” Nesmith added. “Its visuals surpass even Skyrim’s latest graphical updates.” He described The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as so impressive it could be dubbed “Oblivion 2.0.”

Bethesda is juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential Starfield expansions, ongoing Fallout 76 updates, and the Fallout TV series, which will explore New Vegas in Season 2. Fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years.
