"Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Mechanics"
In the upcoming game Dune: Awakening, sandworms will play a pivotal role as a natural force within the game's ecosystem, rather than being at the beck and call of players. Unlike the narrative in Frank Herbert's original novels, where characters could summon these colossal creatures using a device known as a thumper, this feature will not be available in the game. Instead, sandworms are designed as non-player characters (NPCs) with predetermined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game's engine.

Players will not have the ability to strategically summon a sandworm near an enemy base to disrupt their opponents. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players might be able to draw its attention by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. It's important to note that these actions do not guarantee the sandworm's presence in the area.
The iconic act of riding sandworms, a hallmark of the Freman culture as depicted in Herbert's books and the subsequent films, will not be included in Dune: Awakening at launch. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune cinematic universe as the reason for this omission. However, there is a glimmer of hope for fans of this feature, as the developers have mentioned that post-launch patches might introduce additional content related to Freman culture, which could potentially include the much-anticipated worm-riding mechanics. For now, though, there is no guarantee that players will get to experience this iconic activity.
Dune: Awakening is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later. This eagerly awaited game promises to immerse players in the rich and dangerous world of Arrakis, where survival and strategy will be key to mastering the desert environment.
