Ditching the Gacha

Koei Tecmo Europe announced on November 26, 2024, via Twitter (X), that Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian will forgo the gacha system present in its mobile counterpart, Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator. This means players won't be hitting paywalls or needing to grind endlessly for in-app purchases to progress. Enjoy a more traditional, progression-focused experience.

Beyond the absence of gacha, the announcement also highlights offline playability, eliminating the need to own the mobile version. The game's website promises "New protagonists and an original story await in Lantarna," suggesting a shared world but a distinct narrative separate from the mobile game's characters and lore.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is slated for release on PS5, PS4, Switch, and Steam in 2025. Pricing and a precise release date are yet to be revealed by Koei Tecmo.

Atelier Resleriana's (Mobile) Gacha System: A Look Back

Atelier Resleriana Won't Have Gacha

Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator, the mobile game that inspired this new title, is a mainline Atelier game incorporating a gacha system. While retaining core Atelier elements like synthesis and turn-based combat, it also incorporated a monetized character and item acquisition mechanic.

This gacha utilized a "spark" system, awarding medals with each pull towards unlocking characters or Memoria (illustration cards). Unlike a pity system guaranteeing a reward after a certain number of pulls, the spark system required accumulating a specific number of medals. The mobile game launched in January 2024 on Steam, Android, and iOS, receiving Mixed reviews on Steam, but generally positive ratings (4.2/5 on Google Play and 4.6 on the App Store). However, the cost of the gacha mechanic was a point of contention for some Steam players.
