Xbox Friends Return After Long Absence
Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends
Xbox has finally reinstated the much-requested friend request system, ending a ten-year absence. This welcome change addresses a long-standing community plea and marks a significant shift from the previous "follow" system.
A Two-Way Street: More Control, More Connection
In an official announcement, Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton expressed excitement over the return of friend requests, highlighting the renewed emphasis on two-way, invite-based friendships. Users can now send, accept, or decline requests via the console's People tab, providing greater control and clarity in online relationships.
The previous "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the direct connection and control offered by friend requests. The distinction between friends and followers was often ambiguous, leading to confusion.
The "follow" function will remain, allowing users to track content creators and communities without requiring mutual interaction. Existing friendships and followings will be automatically categorized under the new system.
Privacy Paramount: Enhanced Settings for Control
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. The updated system includes enhanced privacy and notification settings, enabling users to manage who can send friend requests, who can follow them, and which notifications they receive. These settings are accessible within the Xbox settings menu.
Overwhelmingly Positive Reception
The news has been met with enthusiastic responses across social media, with users celebrating the return of a familiar and preferred social interaction. The previous system's shortcomings, particularly the influx of unsolicited followers, are frequently highlighted.
Some users humorously admitted to being unaware of the friend request feature's absence. While the system caters to socially active players, it doesn't diminish the appeal of solo gaming.
Rollout and Insider Access
A precise release date for the full rollout hasn't been announced, but given the strong community demand, it's expected soon. Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC are currently testing the feature, with more details on the broader release anticipated later this year. Joining the Xbox Insiders program offers early access.
