The Witcher 4 Breakdown: How Ciri’s Combat Style Differs from Geralt’s

In The Witcher 4, a significant change is afoot: Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, or Ciri, steps into the spotlight, replacing Geralt as the protagonist. This shift has ignited considerable fan speculation about how it will reshape gameplay, particularly the combat system. CD Projekt RED recently offered some intriguing insights during a podcast episode.

The developers highlighted a trailer scene showcasing Ciri battling a monster. Using a chain—a charming callback to The Witcher 1—she subdues her foe. However, it's her acrobatic fighting style that truly distinguishes her.

The developers themselves described the difference between Ciri and Geralt's combat approaches:

“There was this one scene where we see the chain, which is a tribute to The Witcher 1. When she grabs the monster’s head with it and pins it to the ground, she also performs an additional flip, which was really cool because you can’t imagine Geralt doing something like that. He’s very… I’d say he’s agile, but he’s also very… he feels almost like a ‘block’ in a way—he’s bulky and heavy. And she [Ciri] is just… she’s practically like liquid compared to [Geralt].”

This comparison underscores the fundamental contrast between the two characters' fighting styles. Geralt relies on strength and precise strikes, while Ciri's approach is characterized by speed, dynamism, and her inherent agility. Her acrobatic maneuvers promise a thrilling, innovative combat experience unlike Geralt's more grounded style.

With Ciri leading The Witcher 4, players can anticipate a faster, more fluid combat system reflecting her unique abilities and personality. As CD Projekt RED continues to unveil details, anticipation mounts. Will Ciri's gameplay successfully uphold Geralt's legacy? Only time will tell.
