Viking Warfare: Immersive Strategy Game Unveiled
Arctic Hazard unveils Norse, a captivating new strategy game reminiscent of XCOM, but set against the breathtaking backdrop of Viking-era Norway. This title promises a richly detailed historical world, further enhanced by a compelling narrative penned by award-winning author Giles Kristian.
The gaming landscape frequently features medieval fantasy settings. However, for fans of historically-grounded medieval games centered around Central European nobility, titles like Manor Lords and Medieval Dynasty (which incorporate survival elements) offer compelling alternatives. Games such as Imperator: Rome allow players to engage with the Roman Empire and influence the fates of prominent historical figures in large-scale battles. Yet, Vikings consistently remain a popular subject in the gaming world.
Norse offers a fresh take on turn-based strategy, mirroring XCOM's gameplay but within the brutal Viking context of ancient Norway. Players assume the role of Gunnar, a young warrior whose destiny is intertwined with betrayal and vengeance. Gunnar's quest: to hunt down Steinarr Far-Spear, the murderer of his father and fellow countrymen, while simultaneously building his settlement and forging alliances to create a formidable Viking army. Unlike the construction, exploration, and freedom-focused survival game Valheim, Norse prioritizes a narrative-driven experience.
Norse: A New Viking Strategy Game in the Style of XCOM
To ensure historical accuracy and an immersive storyline, Arctic Hazard partnered with Giles Kristian, a prize-winning, Sunday Times best-selling author, to craft the game's script. Kristian, whose novels have sold over a million copies and include more than six Viking-themed works, brings his expertise to this project. The game's trailer showcases the developer's commitment to authentically representing Norway, aiming to create a truly unforgettable Viking experience.
Further gameplay details are available on Arctic Hazard's official website. Players will manage a village, overseeing villagers who collaborate to produce and upgrade equipment for their Viking warriors. Each unit in Norse boasts unique customization options and distinct classes, such as the Berserker (a damage-dealing frenzy specialist) and the Bogmathr (long-range archers).
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, Norse is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Those interested can add Norse to their Steam wishlist; however, a release date has yet to be announced.
