Tencent Takes Majority Stake in Wuthering Waves' Kuro Games

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has significantly increased its stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition grants Tencent majority ownership.
Tencent's Increased Stake

Tencent's shareholding in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, solidifying its position as the majority shareholder. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.
Maintaining Independence
Despite the significant investment, reports suggest Kuro Games will maintain its operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful game studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games stated that this shift will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly address the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved considerable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves. Each title has reportedly generated over $120 million USD in revenue, and both continue to receive regular updates. The recognition of Wuthering Waves with a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards further underscores the studio's achievements.
