Skich Emerges as Alternative App Store Challenger
- Skich is the newest contender entering the alternative app store market.
- It centers on gaming, incorporating a wide range of discovery tools.
- But can it stand out in an increasingly crowded field?
With Apple's ecosystem now more open than ever, a wave of new players has emerged, all competing to become the first major alternative iOS app store. Enter Skich, a gaming-centric platform aiming to challenge rivals like Apptoide by zeroing in specifically on games rather than a broader app selection.
At the heart of Skich is its emphasis on discoverability. The platform revolves around three core elements: a recommendation engine, a swipe-friendly discovery interface, and integrated social features along with curated lists that let you see what your friends and users with similar tastes are playing.
Some of these features may feel reminiscent of Steam—which isn't necessarily a drawback. One issue the Epic Games Store carries over from its PC version is the absence of the social and discovery tools that platforms like Steam and, to a lesser degree, GOG, users expect.

Given this, Skich does have a unique selling proposition going for it. However—and it's a significant however—I'm not convinced that alone will be enough to secure its success. As I’ve noted previously, one of the biggest challenges for new app stores entering the iOS space is convincing users to move away from what they already know.
Epic lures users with free games, while Apptoide attracts attention by offering both games and other apps. So, can Skich achieve the success it's aiming for with its gamer-first approach? It's certainly possible, but by no means guaranteed.
Still, with major publishers like EA and Flexion recently joining forces to explore alternative app stores, we might be heading toward a future where official storefronts take a back seat to emerging third-party platforms.
