Sega's Bold Ventures: Project Century and Virtua Fighter Redefine Innovation

RGG Studio Unveils Two Exciting New Projects
Sega Embraces Bold New IPs and Concepts

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, widely known as RGG Studio, is pushing boundaries with a slate of major projects, including a brand-new IP. With the next Like a Dragon installment and a Virtua Fighter remake already set for 2025, the studio has added two more titles to its roster. Masayoshi Yokoyama, RGG Studio’s head and director, attributes this ambitious lineup to Sega’s willingness to take creative risks.
In early December, RGG Studio debuted trailers for two distinct projects within days of each other. At The Game Awards 2025, they introduced Project Century, a fresh IP set in 1915 Japan. The following day, Sega’s official channel premiered the trailer for the new Virtua Fighter Project, separate from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster. Both projects showcase large-scale production and bold ambition, underscoring RGG Studio’s drive to innovate. With a portfolio of iconic IPs, Sega appears confident in RGG’s ability to deliver, blending trust with a passion for exploring uncharted territory.

“Sega’s strength lies in its openness to the possibility of failure, rather than sticking to predictable projects,” Yokoyama told Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. “It’s part of Sega’s DNA,” he added, noting that early experiments with the Virtua Fighter IP led to bold ideas like transforming it into an RPG, which birthed the action-adventure series Shenmue.
RGG Studio emphasizes that despite managing two major projects concurrently, quality remains paramount, especially for the Virtua Fighter series. Yu Suzuki, the IP’s creator, has voiced support for the new project. With Virtua Fighter as one of Sega’s enduring franchises, Yokoyama, alongside producer Riichiro Yamada and their team, is committed to delivering a polished experience.

Yamada added, “With the new Virtua Fighter, we’re crafting something fresh and exciting that will captivate both longtime fans and newcomers. Stay tuned for more updates!” Yokoyama echoed this enthusiasm, urging gamers to anticipate both titles with excitement.
