HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will resurrect cut content from the original The Last of Us Part II video game, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will feature "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the "Lost Levels" partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer a range of tones, from the relatively calmer party and boar hunt sequences to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monstrous creatures in the Seattle sewers.

This restored content promises a gripping viewing experience. Druckmann hinted that a previously unmentioned, "pretty prominent" character from the game will also appear, echoing the Season 1 inclusion of Frank.

Season 2 introduces numerous new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel. The addition of Catherine O'Hara in a currently undisclosed role adds another layer of intrigue.

With the premiere of Season 2 Episode 1 slated for April, answers to these mysteries are imminent. However, some questions may remain unanswered for longer. Unlike the self-contained Season 1, HBO plans to adapt The Last of Us Part II over multiple seasons. Showrunner Craig Mazin has stated that Part II's extensive narrative necessitates this approach. While a Season 3 hasn't been confirmed, Season 2 is designed with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.
