Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire Cars
Mastering the Art of Hotwiring in Project Zomboid: Your Guide to Easy Vehicle Acquisition
Project Zomboid's vast map presents a significant challenge for traversal. While walking is an option, it's impractical for most players. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are unavailable, hotwiring provides a solution. This guide details the process.
Hotwiring is surprisingly straightforward, requiring minimal effort. However, prerequisites must be met before attempting vehicle theft. While not requiring a top-tier character build, these requirements are crucial:
How Hotwiring Works
Successful hotwiring allows vehicle operation as long as fuel and condition permit, even without the correct keys. To hotwire, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
Hotwiring Steps:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
After fulfilling the prerequisites, these three steps will hotwire any operational vehicle. The process is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Skill Leveling:
For non-Burglar characters, Electrical and Mechanics skills are leveled through in-game activities:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. These are commonly found in homes, businesses, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP. Appropriate tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are necessary for dismantling and installation. Right-clicking vehicle parts and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
