Overwatch 2 Expands PvP Testing to 6v6 Format

Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return

Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will transition to an open queue format. This format will allow 1-3 heroes of each class per team. The possibility of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture remains strong.

The 6v6 mode's initial November 2023 appearance during the Overwatch Classic event showcased its immense popularity. Despite a short initial run, it quickly became a top-played mode. Its return in Season 14, initially planned for December 17th to January 6th (without the classic hero abilities), further solidified its appeal.

Continued high player engagement prompted the extension, announced by Keller on Twitter. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade. Until mid-season, it will retain its current role queue structure. Thereafter, it will shift to open queue, requiring each team to field 1 to 3 heroes from each class.

Arguments for a Permanent 6v6 Mode

The enduring success of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a consistently top player request. The shift to 5v5 was a major change from the original Overwatch, impacting gameplay in ways that resonate differently with various players.

Hope for 6v6's permanent inclusion in Overwatch 2 is higher than ever. Many players anticipate its addition to the competitive playlist, a possibility once playtesting concludes.
