Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is gearing up for an exciting cinematic journey with renowned director Michael Bay at the helm. Universal Pictures has confirmed that Bay, known for his explosive work on the Transformers series, will not only direct but also produce the upcoming OutRun movie. Adding star power to the production, actress Sydney Sweeney is also on board as a producer. The screenplay will be penned by Jayson Rothwell, although plot details remain under wraps and no release date has been set yet.

On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, who played a key role in the Sonic movie franchise, will serve as a producer. Additionally, Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project, ensuring that the essence of OutRun is captured on the big screen.

Originally launched in 1986, OutRun was developed by the legendary Yu Suzuki and became known for its stunning graphics and engaging gameplay. The game has enjoyed multiple iterations and ports over the years, with the last significant release being OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009. Although the franchise has been relatively quiet recently, Sega is actively tapping into its rich catalog, with new titles like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development.

Sega's push into multimedia adaptations has been successful, particularly with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies gaining massive popularity and the recent launch of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon. The video game industry's influence on Hollywood is undeniable, with films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie setting new benchmarks at the box office.

As for the style of the OutRun movie, fans might expect a thrilling, action-packed adventure reminiscent of the Fast & Furious franchise, given Michael Bay's signature approach and Sydney Sweeney's involvement.
