"Nintendo Console Rankings: A Tier List"

Author : Isaac May 17,2025

With the long-awaited reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has officially announced its next big console. Boasting over four decades of experience in video game hardware, we're eager to see what innovations Nintendo has in store for us, although initial impressions suggest a more conservative approach. If you're as excited as we are about this upcoming console, dive into our detailed analysis of the Switch 2 trailer. But before we jump into the future, let's take a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Over the past five decades, Nintendo has launched eight home consoles (NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the Switch) and five handhelds (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS). The question remains: which one stands out as the best? I've taken a stab at ranking them using an IGN Tier List, considering both the groundbreaking hardware and the iconic game libraries each console boasts. Check out my personal tier list below:

The NES holds a special place in my heart as the first console I ever played, with unforgettable memories of classics like Super Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, and the challenging Hook platformer. It easily secures a spot in the S tier. Similarly, the Switch's innovative hybrid design (despite issues like stick drift) and its stellar lineup of games, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Odyssey, also earns it a place in the top tier.

Do you disagree with my rankings? Do you believe the Virtual Boy outperforms the N64? Feel free to create your own tier list and compare your S, A, B, C, and D tiers with the IGN community.
